UpClose with The New Coast

With more exciting times surely just around the corner, we had a chat with The New Coast to find out exactly what they’re going to be up to.

CloseUp stalwarts and long-time staple of the UK alternative pop scene, The New Coast are an outfit that have been consistently winning over hearts and minds over the last few years with their heartfelt and often introspective sound. Nicholas Blyth and Christopher Cheater are longtime friends, and have a chemistry and a connection that oozes from every release that they make.

This is as evident as ever on brand new single ‘Can’t Give Up’. The track is a rousing and often moving one about resilience and perseverance, and given the last few years we’ve had, feels wildly appropriate and resonating. Better times are coming though, and The New Coast are gearing up to get back into the swing of touring and promoting their new sounds, we had a chat with the duo as part of our partnership with CloseUp to find out some more about their plans.

The New Coast, Nick & Chris! It’s great to have a chat. We love your music as you well know. Tell us a bit more about your new music?

Hello CLOUT! We love you too. The latest EP ‘in…Valentino Red’ is a special one for us. It’s like a continuation of the story we’ve been telling through all of our EP’s. All small little moments that make up the bigger picture. It feels like a big progression for us sonically… we can’t wait for everyone to hear it as a whole piece. The new single ‘Can’t Give Up’ is like the last scene in this music film we’ve made, it sort of wraps up all the songs into one. It’s special.

What part of the musical process do you enjoy most, and why? is it performing live, creating your tracks, or..?

Both processes are so addictive. It’s been hard not playing live this last year for us as it’s somewhere we feel most at home. It’s definitely affected my mental health for sure. I realise now that live music is a necessity, not just a luxury. So we’ve been hitting the studio A LOT. And the new new music is sounding oh so sweet. Super excited about that.

The last 12 months and the pandemic have been crazy for musicians, how much has it had an affect on your music?

Weirdly it’s been a really creative time for us. I think it’s made us feel like we have time to actually spend time writing in depth. Luckily we had a lot of music recorded before the pandemic started so that helped us through. We are so ready for things to be back to normal though…we miss playing to people.

If you could create a ‘The New Coast.. Festival’, which 3 artists would you have headlining? (Fri, Sat, Sun)

Friday – Kings Of Leon
Saturday – SZA
Sunday – The Neighbourhood

You hit 110 Above Festival in 2021, one of the most notorious indie hotbeds for exciting talents set on a picturesque farm, what’s it going to be like to be in a field (or barn!) again?

Honestly we cannot wait…it’s felt like a thousand years since we played a festival. It’s going to be amazing cos the crowd will be buzzed to be back. 110 Above is a special place for sure.

Wild Paths is a festival you also hit later this year, the Norwich metropolitan festivals sees you play an indoor festival stage, tell us what to expect from your live set?

A lot of energy. And just good feels all round. We will always be a moody pop kinda band but we will be big, big smiles. Xx
