UpClose with The Night Society

We had a quick intimate chat with UK indie pop duo The Night Society.

Thanks to our partnership with CloseUp, we’ve managed to spend some quality time with some of the more exciting emerging acts on their roster right now, and today is no exception. Guildford duo The Night Society are cultivating a reputation as a reliable source for fun-filled, 80s inspired indie pop, crafting a steady stream of danceable and often introspective tracks.

We caught up with the duo to find out some more about the act, their response to a tumultuous 2020, and some exciting things that they have in the pipeline for the next year.

The Night Society! It’s great to sit down and have a proper chat (Kinda). We’re such big fans of your music as you well know. Tell the world a bit about the musical world of TNS?

Hey! It’s so nice to kinda be with you too! Thank you so much for having us and for enjoying the tunes! It means the world to us.
The Night Society is an indie-pop duo based in Guildford made up of best friends Harry and Tom. Our world comprises of watching tragic movies, messing with retro synths and writing 80s inspired, indie bangers with crystalline guitars and heavy doses of nostalgia.

The last 12 months has been such a crazy year for musicians, how much has it had an impact on your music?

It’s obviously been the weirdest year for us, but musically it has really given us the chance to evolve and further define our sound. We’ve both got such different musical backgrounds and approaches to writing but through all the chaos and zooms we just had so much fun with it. We think the music we’ve written remotely is without a doubt our best stuff yet!
We went into lockdown as an exclusively live act and are coming out of the other end having released three singles (so far!) that have received some playlist love from Spotify and some airtime on Made In Chelsea (which, full disclosure, we may have got a little hooked on).
We’re so grateful and still taken aback by the support we’ve received from everyone while the world is trying to end so thank you to everyone still listening.

We for one are absolutely missing live shows/festivals more than ever thought. If you were to create an ‘Night Society Festival’ (which is a great name btw..) then WHO would be your 3 headliners? (and can we come?)

It’s like gigs have broken up with us and we feel like pure s**t and just want her back! Wow, ‘The Night Society Festival’ would be so fun, and don’t worry you’d be the first name on our guest list.
We debated this line up for hours to get it down to only three! The Wombats were a no brainer for us, we originally became friends over listening to them and have always just had the best time at their live shows since. We are both absolutely adoring everything that Baby Queen is putting out and frankly we want to hear ‘Want Me’ played live more than anything right now. Finally, it has to be the artist behind our all-time favourite tune, the late great Jermaine Stewart. I don’t know if we could actually handle hearing a live rendition of ‘We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off’.

What are the bands plans for 2021, fill us in with all the info you can!

We are so excited for 2021! Our new single ‘TV Dinner’ is coming out on the 12th of March, it’s the start of something we’ve been working on for a long time and we cannot wait for all of you to hear it.
The prospect of live shows coming back is making us positively delirious and we’re so psyched at the thought of finally being able to meet all of you lovely people who have supported us this past year. Dancing in a room together and having the best time with you is long overdue.
We have so much that we can’t tell you about just yet but it’s going to be a good year!
