Charlotte Rose Benjamin‘s acerbic wit and penchant for crafting fun and memorable indie rock tunes are both on full display on new release ‘Cumbie’s Parking Lot’.

The track skirts the line between tongue in cheek and candid and confessional, unapologetically longing for validation and romance but with a sharp, abrasive cutting edge. The track also doubles as an ode to the trailblazing women of the 90s that have allowed these kinds of songs to be made.

“I love all those 90’s rock girls like Courtney Love, PJ Harvey and Amy Mann.” Charlotte says. “They wrote about what it feels like to be a girl in such a specific vulnerable way but they delivered it to you like a rockstar. Like ‘Fuck and Run’ by Liz Phair, she sang about how nobody would commit to her and she just wanted to have a boyfriend so he could buy her a soda. That era of music gave me permission to be sensitive in my writing- it made femininity cool.”

The end result is a track that is allowed to explore these emotions and feelings while never having to sacrifice its credibility. ‘Cumbie’s Parking Lot’ is a storming and often rousing piece of modern indie rock, and Charlotte Rose Benjamin feels like an artist who knows entirely what her sound is and what she wants to write about.

Charlotte directed the music video herself with a camcorder in a friend’s photo studio in Bushwick. “I love dressing up. This video is all about the makeup and costumes. There’s even a choreographed dance sequence. I wanted to explore themes like vanity and exhibitionism while also having that ultra camp element. I never want to take myself too seriously.”
