For all it’s shortcomings, 2020 will almost certainly be looked at as a successful and productive year for The Rills, and one where they have cemented their reputation as an act adept at overcoming adversity. The hard-working Lincoln trio saw their plans halted when live music was stopped earlier this year, but have instead, side-stepped into the world of Tik Tok and short vidoes, showcasing their unique personality and charm to entice listeners over to their raucous sounds.
Thankfully, once they’ve caught your attention, the tunes are more than enough to get you to stick around, as further evidenced by their second new release of the year ‘Stardog’. The track is a glowing advertisement for everything that makes The Rills exciting, their dismissive, tongue-in-cheek lyrical style, penchant for crafting impossibly catchy hooks and melodies, and underlying sense of chaos. This is The Rills at their confident, flowing, best. and the tracks titular character is just another victim of the outfits razor sharp wit and cutting edge.
“The Stardog is an amalgamation of the small town dealers that I knew growing up in Lincoln.” Lead singer Mitch Spencer says.
“He’s very much a big fish in a small pond and that can really get into people’s heads, regardless of what they do. The more quiet and boring the place, the more likely you are to find drugs in my experience – Stardog is the embodiment of that; works a normal job on weekdays but becomes a satirical Pablo Escobar at the weekends.”
