The rising Bristol artist shines on his rousing debut single

Armed with an authentic and engrossing sound that is brought to life through mainly himself, with a bit of help from his friends in the Bristol music scene, multi-instrumentalist Dave Huntriss, better known by the moniker Runner Up, looks to leave an indelible mark on the UK music scene with a sound that feels vibrant, full of life, and as melodic as it is charming.

The debut release from the project is ‘I Wanna Be Late’, an upbeat and relatable track about the weird phase we find ourselves in after a breakup, the duality of needing space but also wanting to see them any chance that you get, and the way that this creates a conflict in our heads. The playful and carefree nature of the sound does a great job of keeping things light-hearted throughout, and there is an anthemic and soaring tone to the artist’s sound that sweeps you up into his narratives and sonic world and is just a joy to find yourself within. The artist has a real sense of character and charisma that shines through this debut release, and it will be nice to hear what else he has in store following such a refreshing and likeable debut.

“I began writing ‘I Wanna Be Late’ at the start of 2018 after starting a new job just after a breakup. Runner Up says of the track. “In the song, I’m late for work and I bump into my ex walking to her office. I then realise that our commutes to work are now mirror images. It’s a song about the conflict of needing distance from someone whilst also looking for any excuse to see them. It’s full of energy and excitement, nostalgia and longing. Hopefully an emotive, uplifting and relatable break-up song.”
