Immersive UK duo Arliston continue to showcase the profound and inventive nature of their distinctive sound on new single ‘Vertical’
Acclaimed for the earnest nature of their songwriting and the painstaking, thoughtful appeal of their nuanced and often moving sound, UK duo Arliston are an outfit who seem to have found the perfect balance between anthemic and emotional, crafting impactful tracks that often feel introspective, soul-searching, and wrapped in sincerity and charm.
Their latest single ‘Vertical’ is the second release from their upcoming new album Disappointment Machine, following the release of the CLOUT-lauded ‘Monks of Lindisfarne’. The track has an almost restless feel to it throughout, partly due to the way that it seems to keep growing and developing and feeling more emotional and passionate as it progresses, achieving a sense of intensity and tension that builds in a rewarding way from its initial more low-key approach and pianos. The overarching narrative of the track also feels incredibly moving and resonating, and makes for a sobering listening experience that leaves a profound impact on you and a lasting impression.
Expanding on this narrative, Arliston’s Jack Ratcliffe says “I had in mind a character simply looking for something- keys or a wallet- in a crumpled pair of jeans on the floor. I have a habit of forgetting where things are and I wanted a song that could reflect that hazy absent mindedness. I also wanted to get across a sense of “if I can’t do even these basic things, how am I meant to ‘carry on’ and do more complex things”. This is where the title ‘Vertical’ comes from, as when I’m in that empty-minded state everything seems daunting, impossible and vertical.”
