The track is from the artist’s compelling and moving new album Love & Grief
On her stirring and rewarding new album Love & Grief, rising Carmel artist Sophia Stephens explore the relationship between love and grief throughout life, with the artist utilising her hands-on approach and intimate sound and style to create a work of art that feels thoroughly authentic and immersive throughout its duration while showcasing the innate appeal of the artist.
A track that we picked out as a highlight from the album is the searching and powerful ‘Up in Flames’, an reflective exploration of a relationship that has fallen apart, with the artist sat in the wreckage of what once was and pouring over the memories and experiences that shaped the relationship and the fact that it was inevitably all going to come to an end. The stripped-back feel of the instrumentation and production really etches every ounce of emotion out of the lyrics and vocals, and makes for a truly compelling and engrossing listening experience and one of the most vulnerable moments on the album.
“I wrote this song as a freshman in highschool, and while there have been a few lyric changes sense then the overall melody and vibe of this song have remained untouched for four years.” Sophia says of the track. “This song was the first song I knew I really wanted on this album, because it always has perfectly shown the theme. The song was inspired to be about going into a relationship knowing in one way or another it will eventually end.”
