We had a chat with New York based alternative rock artist Cold Brew following the release of his explosive new single ‘Younger’
Armed with a vibrant and dynamic alternative rock sound that feels both forward-thinking and like a nod to some of his influences, New York based artist Cold Brew is an artist with an intoxicating and catchy appeal that is packed full of charisma and energy.
The artist’s latest single ‘Younger’ is something of a soft reset for Cold Brew, and has him feeling more revitalised and hungry than ever thanks to the intensity in the approach and hard-hitting instrumentation. The new single focuses on the pressures and growing pains of transitioning into adulthood, and its sound does a great job of amplifying that message through its intensity and sense of drive throughout. We love this new release, and had a chat with Cold Brew to find out a bit more about his journey as an artist so far and what else he has planned for the future.
Who TF is Cold Brew?
Cold Brew is a musician based in New York by way of Washington, DC, but my friends call me Ian.
How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music since I was about 14 years old but I’ve been releasing music as Cold Brew since 2019. Too long, if you ask me!
Why do you make music?
The boring answer is that it’s all I’m good at! The more interesting answer I suppose is that I am super passionate about the creative process. Few things give me the same level of satisfaction as being able to bring an idea from inception all the way to a fully produced track that I enjoy listening to.
What are your biggest influences?
There are so many! Bands like Green Day and Blink 182 influenced me to pick up an instrument and start writing music. As far as Cold Brew goes, I would probably be nowhere without the music of Jimmy Eat World. I feel like everyone knows them for The Middle and, while that’s a great song, their other material has such a feeling of melancholy that I just eat up.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
I would probably have to say the release show for my new song “Younger” that I just played at Berlin Under A here in New York. It was so much fun and it was nice to be able to play a show celebrating something I’m so proud of.
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
My older music gets a little eclectic and hard to pin down, but I would say you can take any noun and throw the emo adjective in front of it and that’s Cold Brew.
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
When I headline the 9:30 club in DC then I’ll feel like I can just retire and call it. I’ve been wanting to do that since I was a kid.
We love your new single ‘Younger’, what more can you tell us about it?
“Younger” is the first song I’ve released in about 2 years and I’m treating it like a soft reset. It’s like when there’s this huge movie franchise and you never know when to start watching. Well I’m telling you all NOW is the time to hop on the bandwagon! None of the previous lore matters anymore! It’s a song about being frustrated with the responsibilities of daily life and how sometimes those things can make your life feel like it’s racing past you and taking you away from your ability to follow what really makes you happy.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
I’m putting the final touches on my album now and then I’m playing the singles game. You all are going to be so sick of me by the time it comes out!
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
My mom. When I go visit my family back in DC she’ll often pull into the house blasting one of my songs in her car and it’s so funny but also very sweet.
