On her stirring and vulnerable new single ‘you say i’m ugly when i cry’, Philadelphia singer-songwriter Sophie Coran continues to establish her signature charm and engrossing songwriting as she continues to build steam as she edges closer to the release of her sophomore album, i don’t go to new york anymore.

The track explores a relationship that is trying to navigate rocky and uncomfortable waters, leading to you finding yourself in situations where the person that you were once closest to and has been the most important person in your life suddenly seems to be pulling themselves away and making things difficult. The engrossing and expansive nature of the sound does a great job of exploring the artist’s conflicted feelings and state of mind, trying to make light of and come to terms of the situation around her while just wanting reassurance and for things to be okay. This makes for a release that feels wrought with anxiety as the relationship dissolves in front of her, a feeling that many will relate to and resonate with that is explored in such an interesting way.

“Back in 2020, I’d just discovered Lizzy McAlpine’s music, and was blown away by her authentically unafraid and vulnerable sound.” Sophie says of the track. “As a pianist, I’ve always been fascinated by artists who play the guitar because their approach to writing is so different from my own. There are all of these other elements – percussive rhythms, chord voicings, strum patterns– that are specific to guitarists. When I sat down at my piano to write this song, I thought about arpeggiating the chord progression to mimic the sound of a guitarist fingerpicking. I kept coming back to these confessive songwriting techniques that artists like McAlpine use to writeabout something so close to my heart.”
