Over the last few months as they have released more and more excellent singles, we have grown increasingly excited for the release of Soot Sprite‘s debut album Wield Your Hope Like a Weapon, and the full release has more than lived up to our expectations.

One of the tracks that encapsulates the spirit and appeal of the album is its title track, a rallying cry to hold onto the hope that we have and fight against the possibility that the world can strip us of what we have left, leaving us with apathy and no will to fight or push forward. The defiant and charged-up nature of the track does a great job of trying to keep this figurative fire burning and invigorate listeners, and the emotional and dynamic core of the band serves as the perfect conduit for their message and the fighting spirit that they embody.

“This struck me so deeply, the idea that if we lose hope we lose our ability to change anything.” songwriter Elise Cook says. “I tried to make a point to never become jaded to the horrors that persist in the world, even with everything that came since the writing this (the amplified genocide in Palestine by Israel, the persecution of climate protesters here in the UK, megalomaniacs coming back into power). The powers in place depend on us becoming complacent to what they’re doing, so we have to hope for better and organise.”
