Unwrapped: Sean Kennedy – Rear View

We had a chat with talented New York indie pop artist Sean Kennedy about his stirring new single ‘Rear View’

An expansive and memorable talent who has captured our attention in recent times for the thoughtful charm and appeal of his distinctive sound, New York-based indie pop artist Sean Kennedy is somebody capable of conjuring a range of emotions from his listeners thanks to the heartfelt nature of his writing and the alluring glow of his vocals and soundscapes.

His latest single ‘Rear View’ is a track that sees him trying to condition himself to look optimistically towards the future rather than with one eye behind him at what has happened in the past. It is a really thoughtful listening experience that will resonate with listeners who can relate to the idea of being unable to truly move forward and being shackled to what has come before, and his stirring and emotionally charged sound just amplifies the strength of its message. We love this new release, and had a chat with Sean to find out a bit more about it and how it came together.

Hey! We love your new single ‘Rear View’, what more can you tell us about it?

Thank you! Rear View is a song I’m so proud of. I wrote it last year when I was at a very pivotal point in my life. I was trying to stop myself from dwelling on the past and begin to move forward. It’s a song about putting yourself first.

What was the process like putting it together?

Chriss Rune Olsen Angvik DM’d me on Instagram because he had heard a song of mine and he asked if I’d be willing to work on something. We had a call and I told him what I was listening to and he asked me to send him some demos. I didn’t have much written, so I sat down with my guitar, just replaying the past few months of my life. It came together very quick.

What were your biggest influences when creating it?

I was listening to a lot of alternative rock at the time, but I told Chriss I wanted him to put his imprint on it, too. We went through a ton of different versions before landing on this one.

Has your process or outlook changed much over your years releasing music?

I think a lot of my music has been written to help get me through situations in my life and I think that’s remained the case throughout my career. However, this record was one of the first times I was trying to curate a specific sound to match the lyrics and the emotions I was experiencing.

What else do you have planned for the near future?

I’m so excited that I finally get to announce my album, The Person in the Mirror, is coming out this fall. It’s the first record I’m putting out under my label, and I’m so extremely proud of it. I can’t wait for everyone to hear.
