Hey! We love your new EP, what is it with me? What more can you tell us about it?
Thank you so much!! “what is it with me?” is basically a dogear in the process of me growing up at fifteen years old. It goes through all of these big feelings that I still relate to now at sixteen- heartbreak, crash out, yearning, confusion, first loves- the things that pretty much everyone goes through in their teenage years.
What was the process like putting it together?
I wrote all the songs from my own experiences, so with all the songs, I’d sit down in my room with my guitar or at my piano pretty much directly after an experience. Most of the time when I write, the song comes out as a full thought- that was definitely the case with this set of songs because whenever I’d have an idea, I’d write the entire thing like I was practically word vomiting my feelings into the lyrics.
Recording these songs in the studio was some of the most fun I’ve ever had. Period. I really loved seeing all the music come together. It meant a lot to me to have the songs in their final form, because it gave me a physical, tangible existence of my feelings- which is a crazy cool concept to me and something I love about songwriting.
What were your biggest influences when creating it?
I think my biggest musical influences were artists like ROLE MODEL, (especially the song “Frances”!!), Lizzy McAlpine and Gracie Abrams. I really love the sonic landscape they paint with their music, because I feel like the lyrics pair so well with the music and chords they use.
Do you find it liberating getting to turn these experiences into songs in such an earnest way?
I can’t really picture expressing myself in any other way!! It was really cathartic for me to write this music after experiencing things, and it’s even cooler to be able to look back at that chapter of my life. It’s also one of my favorite things in the world to hear when someone reaches out to let me know how much they relate to one of my songs. It not only makes me feel less isolated in my brain, but it’s really wild to me that people relate to songs that I wrote in a puddle of my own tears in my bedroom.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
Oh boy, do I have some cool stuff on the way. New music for sure. 😉
