Her thoughtful songwriting and storytelling ensures that Janet Devlin‘s releases are always packed full of immersive moments and captivating charm, and through her album Emotional Rodeo and its deluxe edition Not My First Emotional Rodeo, it feels like we have been provided with a lifetime of captivating tracks that just continue to add new facets to her appeal and continue to broaden her allure as an artist.

The latest of these singles is ‘Candy’, a track that puts the artist’s distinctive spin on the sugar baby/ sugar daddy dynamic, where emotions and wires get tangled up and a genuine relationship actually blossoms in a situation that is often seen as cynical and transactional. Her upbeat alt-country sound brings the narrative to life in wonderfully charming and fun fashion, and makes for a listening experience that feels familiar and engrossing while putting a unique Janet Devlin twist on things as she does so well.

Speaking about the song, Devlin explains: “With two Irish people in a room, I knew we had to tell a story. I love tackling taboo topics, and after a random chat about sugar-babies (probably sparked by a TikTok I’d seen), we ran with the idea. What fascinated me was flipping the stereotype: a sugar baby who actually falls in love with her sugar daddy. From the outside it looks shallow and transactional, but like any relationship, it’s messy, imperfect, and real.”
