We had a chat with Australian alternative artist Harlow Reign following the release of her cathartic new single ‘Take Me Away’
Drawing inspiration and strength from trailblazing alternative artists like Amy Lee, Hayley Williams, and Australian duo Killing Heidi, rising Melbourne artist Harlow Reign does a great job of channelling the empowering and fierce nature of these artists to craft a sound of her own that melds hard-hitting emotion and instrumentation with lush, melodic moments that are packed full of charm and personality.
Her latest single ‘Take Me Away’ is a cathartic and driven release that utilises an atmospheric style to address a battle against dark thoughts and impulses and a wish to be liberated from them. The contrast between light and dark dynamics and impactful moments does a great job of illuminating this struggle and painting a picture of somebody fighting back from some of their lowest moments, and makes for a resonating and powerful listening experience for listeners to attach themselves to and find solace in. We love this new release, and had a chat with Harlow Reign to find out a bit more about the story behind it and the artist’s journey on the whole.
Who TF is Harlow Reign?
How long have you been making music?
Unofficially? For years. I’ve been writing, refining and finding my sound long before anyone had heard of me.
Why do you make music?
Music is my calm happy place and my release. I love seeing where an idea for a song can go from the original concept. Music allows me to speak the words I might not be able to say and hope when other people hear my songs they are able to relate and know their feelings are validated.
What are your biggest influences?
When I was finding my voice and style it was definitely Amy Lee from Evanescence and Hayley Williams from Paramore. The way they use their voice to speak through their songs but also bringing intensity and raw emotion into the vocal would always blow my mind. This was something I love and respect about vocalist and hope that I am able to do the same.

What would you say has been your best moment so far?
My whole music journey! I have always wanted to have music in my life but there was a fear that I could never do it or was worried about other people’s opinion about it. The fact people around the world are listening to my music, understanding it, relating with it and being able to use it to find their voice is all I could ever ask for.
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
Raw, honest and unfiltered.
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
Once I released my first single to signing with HITMINT, I am content to say I have made it! I am completely grateful for all the opportunities my music has given me.
But my absolute dream would be watching a show/movie and seeing in the credits ‘Music By Harlow Reign’ and of course singing a duet with my ultimate vocal idol Amy Lee.
We love your new single ‘Take Me Away’, what more can you tell us about it?
Take Me Away is about the constant inner struggle of those deep dark thoughts and the want to be free of them. The song is a tale of someone trying so hard to see the light admits all the darkness, an extremely personal journey for me. The build up in the middle of the song symbolises someone that starts to escape the darkness but then the music is brought down again to show even though they thought they were free, the darkness has consumed them again. Then music builds up again and this is to symbolise they have broken free.
I find this is a common story for most people and I want this song to help those who are continuously consumed by the darkness to know there is light on the other side. I hope this song helps people that are feeling this way and for them to know they are not alone on their journey.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
More releases are due to come out this year and possibly an EP.
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
It is definitely my family and friends. Their support has been amazing and everything one could ever ask for. I know as soon as a sing is released they are the first ones to listen to it.
