Unwrapped: Lana Karlay – Running Out of Time

We had a chat with emerging Australian artist Lana Karlay about her stirring new single ‘Running Out of Time’ and plans for the future

Here at CLOUT, we love Lana Karlay‘s new single ‘Running Out of Time’, a smooth and stripped-back new R&B release that sees her teaming up with  Cam’dn to craft a poignant narrative about relationships and the fear that you may have left it to late to make things right.

The track is packed full of personality and charm throughout, with the two vocalists complimenting each other’s heartfelt delivery effortlessly and making for a compelling listening experience that is packed full of charm and earnest appeal. At still just 17, Lana is quickly growing into an artist that people desperately need to sit up and take attention of, and we had a chat with her to find out a bit more about her new single and how it came together.

We love your new single ‘Running Out of Time’, what was the process like putting it together?

‘Running Out of Time’ came together when I was in LA working on music for my debut album. I wrote and recorded it with producer Esthy, and we kept the production pretty stripped back so the emotion really sits in the vocals. The song is basically about that moment when you realise someone matters more than you thought and you don’t want to waste time anymore.

What were your biggest influences when creating it?

I’m really inspired by artists like SZA and Post Malone who blend emotional storytelling with atmospheric production. I wanted this song to feel kind of late night and introspective like something you’d listen to when you’re just sitting with your thoughts.

How was the creative process behind the music video?

We filmed the video in LA and Esthy directed it as well. The idea was to keep it visually simple but really focused on the mood of the song. We wanted it to feel a little cinematic but still very real and emotional.

What else do you have planned for the near future?

Right now I’m finishing my debut album while also balancing Year 12 back home in Australia, which is a bit of a crazy combo. I’ve got another single coming soon, more visuals planned, and I’ll be heading back to the US to keep writing and recording.
