We had a chat with Scottish singer-songwriter Danny McGuire as he looks to kick start his solo work with the release of the new single ‘Won’t let nobody hurt you’
An artist who has earned with way onto our radar with the release of his compelling and multi-faceted new single ‘Won’t let nobody hurt you’, London based Scottish indie pop artist Danny McGuire is somebody who melds thoughtful songwriting with warm, authentic-feeling soundscapes that are packed full of heart and emotionally rousing qualities.
His aforementioned recent release is only his second single as a solo artist, and serves as something a return to the project following a five year gap between this and his debut release. With such a promising and rousing sound and a re-emergence in the works, we figured that it would be the perfect time to get to know a bit more about Danny, his story, and what more we should expect from him in the near future.
Who TF is Danny McGuire?
Danny McGuire is an independent musician from Scotland living in London.
How long have you been making music?
Yikes – a very long time! I started playing guitar when I was 8 and it’s been a huge part of my life ever since.
Why do you make music?
I honestly couldn’t say, I’m not sure that it’s a choice.
What are your biggest influences?
Too many to name, but let’s roll with David Bowie, Lykke Li, Kurt Vile, Phoenix, Hiss Golden Messenger, The National, Kevin Morby, Simple Minds, Death Cab For Cutie / Chris Walla, Idlewild, Frightened Rabbit, Edwyn Collins, The War on Drugs, Fleetwood Mac, David Byrne, Sonic Youth and Talking Heads for now.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
Releasing ‘Won’t let nobody hurt you’ felt great!
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
I’d say my music carries a hopeful, determined spirit within a sonic world of guitars and dreamy, warm analog sounds.
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
I’m not sure I think about music in those terms anymore, although I definitely did when I was younger. For me, exploring sounds and songwriting, playing shows and pushing myself creatively to release the best music I can is more than enough – anything else is a welcome bonus!

I’ve been really lucky to have lived in quite a few cities in my life so far (Glasgow, Brisbane, Toronto, Amsterdam and London) and that’s informed how I think about things.
These experiences were at the forefront of my mind when I was writing ‘Won’t let nobody hurt you’ and the song plays with the idea of a conversation between a city and one of its citizens.
On the surface it sounds like a sad love song, but it’s really about trying to hold onto a version of a place that no longer exists.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
‘Won’t let nobody hurt you’ marks the relaunch of my solo work and I’m excited to release more music this year and get back to playing shows.
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
I’d have to say my lovely partner who has remained kind and supportive of my music despite hearing about a million versions of each song.
