We had a chat with ascendent pop punk artist Laura Musgrave about her fiery new break up single ‘Crumbs’

An emerging UK alternative artist who is finding her place and audience within the scene thanks to her relatable writing, impactful melodies, and her distinctive sense of personality and charm, Laura Musgrave is an award-winning rising star with a vibrant sound to go alongside accolades including ‘International Female Single of the Year (Gold Award)’ at the 2023 International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA) Awards.

Her latest single ‘Crumbs’ is an impassioned break up track that sees the artist reflecting on a relationship that didn’t work out and examining the way that she would accept the bare minimum without realising that she deserved better. We have already celebrated the new release and the artist as a whole on the site, and wanted to have a chat with Laura to find out a bit more about how it came together, the story behind it, and what else she has planned for the near future.

Hey! We love your new single ‘Crumbs’, what more can you tell us about it?

Thanks so much! ‘Crumbs’ came from a past experience where I’d been turning someone’s crumbs into a full meal and convincing myself it was enough. It’s that moment where you clearly see that you deserve more and refuse to go back.

What was the process like putting it together?

I was lucky to work with some amazing and talented people who I’ve known for years. That always helps, because you have some background together and it makes the process much smoother. I wrote ‘Crumbs’ with my friend and fellow UK songwriter, Emma Gale. Once I’d recorded my vocals and some basic guitar and drums here in the UK, the song travelled across to the US. There, my brilliant producer and mix engineer Becky Willard (VoxFox Productions) brought the song to life, and looped in Jordan Saucier for guitars and Brandon Allshouse (Steel House Mastering) for mastering.

What were your biggest influences when creating it?

I was listening to a lot of early Stand Atlantic, Avril Lavigne’s ‘Love Sux’ album, and Taylor Acorn’s albums. I wanted ‘Crumbs’ to feel like it was something you could sing along to, but also like it packed an emotional punch.

What should we expect from your upcoming new EP that the track is from?

It’s a bit of a spectrum – all themed around figuring out relationships from a grounded, more assured place. There’s break up songs, like ‘Crumbs’, there’s a big emo ballad, and there’s at least one or two tunes about love that are a bit lighter. Different colours within the same sonic world. I wanted it to feel like we were exploring new ideas within existing themes people might already recognise in my writing.

What else do you have planned for the near future?

I’m putting together a live band to get out and hopefully do some gigs. We’ll be posting live dates at Bands In Town: www.bandsintown….grave. I also play solo on Twitch twice a week and love chatting there with everyone – so come stop by and say hello! www.twitch.tv/la…emusic
