We had a chat with Mac Wood about his stirring and emotionally-charged new single ‘Sea’
An endlessly thoughtful and stirring new release that is packed full of poignant moments, likeable charm, and a raw, intimate feel throughout, latest Mac Wood single ‘Sea’ is a moving track that utilises his thoughtful, metaphorical writing to convey feelings of isolation and loneliness in a way that feels powerful and real throughout.
The stripped-back nature of the sound, eventually bursting into life later on, does a really great job of mirroring these feelings and the toll that it has taken on his mental health, and it feels sure to resonate with people who have similarly felt lost at sea and gone through similar experiences thanks to how stark and resonating it feels. We love the new release and the way that Mac Wood articulates his feelings, and had a chat with the artist to find out a bit more about it and the way that it came together .
Hey! We love your new single ‘Sea’, what more can you tell us about it?
‘Sea’ is a track that really means a lot to me. I wrote back when I was in school during a time when I was struggling with my mental health. I remember just putting all my emotions into writing it and when I was finished, I felt like a burden had been lifted in a sense. Fast-forward 5-6 years and it is one of the most popular songs I play live. I think it really strikes a chord in people and it’s always nice to see people hold their torches up when I perform it.
What was the process like putting it together?
It was a while ago of course, but I remember it just being one of those songs you write that just seems so effortless, like I didn’t have to really think about what to put into it – I just knew.
What were your biggest influences when creating it?
I’ve always been a big fan of Bon Iver and Elliot Smith. Those guys just have a way of expressing how they feel with their lyrics which is so unique and individual and yet at the same time can be related to by anyone. I remember around the time of writing ‘Sea’ I first listened to ‘For Emma Forever ago’ and I was like I want THAT feeling in my music.
What can we expect from your upcoming debut EP?
I’m so excited to share my debut EP with everyone, it collated my first three singles and ‘The Times’, ‘Don’t Mind My Chatter’ and of course ‘Sea’ and adds a new song which I know people are going to love… because it’s my favourite to play live.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
The future is looking bright! Loads of gigs, as much as the band and I can play really. So excited to play Manchester for the first time in February. I’m also filming a music video for my final single of the EP in February too, which is going to be awesome. Of course, there is going to be an event to celebrate the EP launch, which I promise is going to be a night to remember. But other than that, more writing, more releases, some festivals. People should certainly stick around and keep an eye out.
