We had a chat with rising UK alternative band Maystones following the release of their ambitious new single ‘Meltdown’
As they usher in a vibrant and exciting new era that promises to showcase the best of their sound, Hertfordshire alternative outfit Maystones delve into their most expansive and cutting edge side on new single ‘Meltdown’, a track that has already found a place as an atmospheric introduction to their lauded live shows.
The new single delves into themes like anxiety and uncertainty in compelling and relatable fashion, with the dynamic nature of the instrumentation and punchy feel of the driving riffs providing it with a real sense of stakes and drama. This feels like Maystones truly coming into their own and pushing the confines of their sound and style, and we had a chat with the exciting rising bands to find out a bit more about the new single and what else they have planned.
What was the process like putting it together?
Our writing process took a bit of a change for Meltdown. It started with Zac coming up with the opening bass line to which he wrote the majority of the lyrics. He then took it to Steve’s and over a few beers with Dec wrote the guitars and synth lines for the tune. Meltdown was then taken to our next rehearsal and everything fell into place after that.
What were your biggest influences when creating it?
We wanted to create a dramatic, big sounding tune we could use to open our gigs, something a bit outside of what we were doing. At the time, Zac was listening to a lot of Radiohead and early Muse and from these got the idea for a distorted bass line to open the song. Everything sort of fell into place naturally after that. We are really proud of the song lyrically as well, and think Zac really nailed the words. They touch on the subject of anxiety and worrying about things beyond our control, something we know most of us out here can relate to.
What should we expect from this new era of Maystones?
We’ve been working hard over the last 12-18 months to really nail down our sound and take it to a place that is unique to us. When we started we were definitely still finding our feet sonically and changed our sound a lot, never sticking to one thing for long and jumping between influences. Now we think we’ve found our spot and are really proud of our current sound; our overall songwriting and live performances have stepped up dramatically off the back of this. Now the focus is on making songs that make a real impact on people, whether through the music itself or by striking a chord through the lyrics – ideally a bit of both.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
We have a big headline show at Dingwalls 2 on Friday December 20th that we’re really excited about with This Feeling. Going into the new year we are optimistic, and we’re hoping to build some wider recognition for our sound and live shows. We’d love to get a couple more major festival appearances under our belts, and as always we’ll continue to pump out plenty of new music. Our best song is always the next one up.
