Boasting an immersive modern pop sound that is bursting with charismatic allure and authenticity, exciting rising star Al Coffey has wasted no time demonstrating his potential with a string of thoroughly memorable and engrossing singles that underscore the talent and poise that he possesses as a songwriter and artist.
The artist’s latest single ‘I Get Sad’ is one that delves into the intricacies and bittersweet feelings that come with a relationship that is reaching its expiry date, coming to terms with the fact that the person you’re sharing your space with is part of the reason for your unhappiness. The anthemic and enlightening feel of the sound is amplified by a gospel-inspired singalong chorus that serves to encapsulate everything that makes Al feel so unique and engaging, adding a whole other layer to his sound. We love the artist’s unique approach to this track and his writing as a whole, and had a chat with him to find out a bit more about his journey as an artist and his latest single.
How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music my whole life in one way or another, but I wasn’t ready to release music until about two years ago.
Why do you make music?
Good question! Honestly the most simple answer is it feels good. I think I have a need to communicate with people, but I’m also not super articulate off the cuff, so writing songs gives me time to say what I really mean.
What are your biggest influences?
I love so much music, this is always a hard question. I’m really inspired by queer pioneers like George Michael or kd lang. Recently I loved Omar Apollo’s latest album.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
Anytime someone I don’t know DMs me out the blue to say the like my song is surreal. Especially if they live really far away from me. Those small interactions mean a lot.
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
I’d say chill pop with 80’s and soulful influences.
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
Headlining a festival would be incredible.
We love your new single ‘I Get Sad’, what more can you tell us about it?
I Get Sad is about the last few weeks of a toxic relationship dynamic I found myself in. In reality I got dumped in this relationship (massive salt in the wound), but I like the idea of someone listening to it and deciding to choose whatever makes them happy.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
I’ll be playing a gig with Future Hits Radio in London this November 7th. I’m about to get back in the kitchen to cook up songs for next year.
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
My parents are always super supportive, I’m lucky in that regard. My dad can literally tell you my daily streaming data better than I could!
