We had a chat with emerging New York artist Yianna and found out some more about her uniquely fierce sound.
Yianna is an artist who has a storied journey to get to where she is now, even though she has only been releasing her own music in its current form since 2019. A New York native born to immigrant parents, the artist has always had a passion for music and has paid her dues writing and performing backup vocals for other artists and most notably on shows like Good Morning America.
Now packing her own fully-fledged sound and armed with huge tunes such as ‘When I’m Loving You’ and uncompromising new release ‘Two Fingers’, Yianna looks to be on the cusp on something substantial and exciting. There is no better time to find out some more about the exciting artist as she continues to build up steam and create a name for herself, and after a chat with the artist we’re here to provide you with some more about her.
Who TF is Yianna?
Hi, I’m Yianna and I’m an artist from NYC!
How long have you been making music?
Honestly I started singing and songwriting about 9 years ago when I was a teenager. It’s been a long and winding road lol.
Why do you make music?
Making music is a pretty essential part of my life. I find it’s really important for me to be constantly singing or writing just to keep myself in a good headspace. When I don’t go to the studio for a bit I get super depressed. I need music to be a healthy functioning person, which maybe isn’t so healthy, but it’s just one of the most important things in my life.
What are your biggest influences?
Ah, I have so many! Actually I was just having a conversation the other day about how Mark Ronson’s ‘Late Night Feelings’ is one of the best albums of the last few years. I’ve been listening to it on loop since it came out. He’s someone I’m very influenced by.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
Ya know, a few months ago a friend of mine Sasha Rome posted my song “When I’m Loving You” on TikTok and it went a bit viral. It was really unexpected and so exciting to see how many people resonated with the song.
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
I guess I would say it’s soulful pop music.
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
To be able to go on tour and perform for thousands of people. I would do anything to get that experience. I love performing live.
We love your new release ‘Two Fingers’, what more can you tell us about it?
Thank you so much! Well as cliche as it sounds I went through a bad breakup. It was the first time I’d ever experienced mistreatment or betrayal at that level and I felt every negative emotion you could possibly imagine. I never went off on my ex or went around telling people what he did, I just wrote a lot of music. My co-writers Jamie and Mike really encouraged the session. I didn’t want to say anything mean, but they were like let’s just do it, it’s okay, let it out. So I did. Making the music video with my friends was so much fun. Daniel Francis and I directed it together. They all really helped my vision come to life.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
I have so much music in the works so I’m hoping to just continue to release it this year. I hope to do some live shows before the year ends too.
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
Aw man, hahaha. I’ve got a few but I’m going to say my neighbor who bangs on the wall when I record too loud.
