The duo showcase their indie-folk sound and seamless chemistry on the new release.
Alpha Mare are an indie-folk duo that consists of Andrew Fowler and Izé Yeng Goodfriend, two friends who met in Maui, and formed a bond through the similarities that the two shared, in spite of their geographical differences and contrasting lives.
Having formed in 2019, the duo have now released their debut album The Colt of the Virgin, and with it, the new track ‘Wilderness Begins’. The project is filled with so many unique quirks and sonic moments throughout the sounds that it feels hard to do it justice with words. There is a nuance to the track, with its rousing, almost transcendent soundscape providing the perfect backdrop for Izé’s’ acrobatic, contorting vocals. ‘Wilderness Begins’ and the album as a whole revel in the ability to confound and surprise you, whether through moments of profound clarity and heart, through vocal or musical expansiveness that emerge out of nowhere, or just the sheer scope and ambition of the record. ‘Wilderness Begins’ itself is packed with stylistic left turns and poignant imagery, making for a sound and package that feels like it would take a lifetime to unpack and dissect in way that does it justice.
