The track comes with a similarly rousing new music video featuring puppets.
On her rousing and endlessly thoughtful new single ‘The War’, Canadian alt-pop Amelie Patterson explores the secret battles that many of us fight every single day, either inside their own heads or having to helplessly watch loved ones waging wars that we can only support so much with.
The track also comes with a similarly poignant video, using Amelie’s kitchen as the settling for puppets (utilised expertly by Jaunita Dawn of Longgrass Studios) to have an intimate conversation reflecting the narrative and subtext of the track in rousing and entertaining fashion. The puppets add an almost surrealist aspect to a conversation that feels very human and intimate, making for a captivating juxtaposition that maintains the sense of vulnerability and charm created by the track.
Sonically, the track has this really nuanced and measured approach that amplifies the message of the track through its soft power. Amelie’s encouraging vocals and the deftness in which she articulates her combative and inspiring message feels both raw and captivating, packed full of heart and emotion, more than happy to link arm in arm with listeners and help guide them through whatever they are going through. ‘The War’ is a truly powerful and resonating piece of storytelling that showcases the strength and gravity of Amelie Patterson’s songwriting and impactful sound.
Amelie further explains, “’The War’ was written as one side of an incredibly difficult conversation to have. It’s a plea, asking a loved one to stay and fight through the darkness. It’s a very helpless situation watching someone suffer when all you can offer is your love and support. No one has to battle against mental illness alone, but taking the steps to address it has to come from within; and that can be its own war for both parties. Over the years of performing this song so many people have shared beautiful and heartbreaking stories with me, and my only wish for this song is that it continues to connect with people and their own experiences. I wrote this song for anyone who needs it and for anyone who has ever had to ask a loved one to ‘fight the war’.”
