While the original track has a sombre narrative, the upbeat and energetic feel of the instrumentation gives it a peppy and typically 80s appeal, and Ava flips that on its head by doubling down on the emotion and heart-wrenching capabilities of the track and getting the most out of them, making for a captivating listening experience that is full of charm. This isn’t just a modern take on a classic track, it is a reimagining that pushes it into a more reflective direction that feels like it gives it a whole life of its own in the process.
“Last Christmas has always been one of my favorite holiday songs,” says Ava. “Its upbeat sound contrasts with a more melancholy lyric. In my cover, I wanted to let that softer, more emotional side emerge, showing the vulnerability at the heart of the song.”
