The self-released track is the artist’s first release of 2022.
Beija Flo has always been an artist who does things her own way, and her uncompromising vision and approach has made for some of the most captivating and distinctive sounds to come out of the UK music scene as of late.
Following on from the frenetic and chaotic sprint that was 2021s ‘Heads or Tails’, the artist has followed that up with ‘Waiting for the Sun’, a track that starts off feeling more traditional and measured before descending into more delightfully Beija-esque chaos. There is a real sense of heart and emotion to this track, and it schizophrenically bounds between beautiful, poised balladry and unrestrained bouts of energy and catharsis. The thing that ties both sides of this track together is that they both feel as engaging and memorable as each other, and provide a perfect summation of the plethora of talents that the artist has at her disposal.
“I find it hard to describe what ‘Waiting for the Sun’ is – not because I don’t know what it’s about, but because it’s emotionally challenging to talk about. Beija Flo says of the single. “It feels like such a milestone in my life to finally be releasing it. I’ve been sitting on it for the entirety of my adult life, it’s had many guises.”
I suppose I find talking about Waiting for the Sun so difficult because it’s a medal. It’s a big medal I wear across my chest, day in, day out. It was born in the middle of a war, and is now a growing series of very precious battle scars. It’s hope.”
