Lauded Newcastle art-rock outfit Cat Ryan are back. Having released three acclaimed releases in 2020, the outfit are back releasing new songs after taking time out to finish university. What is immediately apparent is that the outfit haven’t lost a step in the last two years, with their new single ‘Rex Mundi’ providing a reassuring reintroduction to the outfit, and setting the tone for an upcoming EP.

The new track has an insatiably bouncy and fun sound, packed with fun little sonic moments and a carefree instrumental that feels as whimsical as it does catchy. At just over two minutes long, the track feels like a restless sprint, something which aligns with the imagery surrounding greyhounds throughout. The greyhounds represent strength, and the fight in all of us to stand up against injustice head on, rather than just try to cope with it or avoid it. The end result is a track with empowering lyrics, an effortlessly catchy sound, and boundless energy that is begging to be translated into the live scene – more of the same please.

Mary-Anne (singer, writer & multi-instrumentalist) opens up about the song: “‘Rex Mundi’ came to fruition whilst I was visiting my family’s remote farm in rural Ireland. Having recently finished university and with no service or any wifi, I was able to sit down and write without distractions.

“The musical basis for the song arose from a fun bassline I created with a midi keyboard. With the addition of the upbeat drums, it evolved into a fast-paced song which, naturally, called for lyrics with a fast-moving theme – hence the greyhounds! In terms of the lyrics, these came about after visiting my aunt and uncle nearby, where I learned that they’d recently got a new greyhound named ‘Rex Mundi’ (Latin for ‘King of the World’), which instantly resonated with me and, as greyhounds are known for their speed, it seemed like a perfect theme to fit with the musical vibe.”
