The track is their first release back after almost two years away
Armed with a thoughtful sound and a likeable charm that has seen them win over tonnes of admirers over the last few years, Australian trio EGOISM are a band who’s unique appeal sees them spanning genres like indie, dream pop, bedroom pop and emo, and often leads to this thoughtful and introspective releases that leave a memorable impression on you as a listener.
Their latest single ‘Sydney’ is their first song back after two years, and explores a fractured relationship with the city that they live in and grew up in. The thoughtful, often bittersweet lyrics and moving charm of the sound makes for some really engrossing moments here, and there is an authenticity and honesty within the themes that will feel all too relatable and resonating for some listeners who feel stuck in where they live for one reason or another.
“All my friends keep moving away.” EGOISM’s Scout says. “They move interstate or overseas, and it’s almost always for the same reason. Sydney is so expensive;I may as well live in London/LA/Berlin. And I want to be mad or disappointed but often feel the same. I think maybe I should live somewhere else sometimes, everyone else has done it. But I’m stuck. I love Sydney, but I also feel trapped by it. My family lives here, my band lives here, and my (remaining) friends.”
