The track is the latest single from the artist’s highly-awaited upcoming album Girl Prometheus
If there is one thing that we should expect from new singles from upcoming Flower Face album Girl Prometheus, it is to have our hearts wrenched from us by the heartbroken narratives that the album promises and the deeply immersive and compelling nature of the Ruby McKinnon’s soundscapes and narratives that leave a lasting impression on you as a listener.
The latest single from the album comes in the form of ‘Skeleton Key’, a track that explores the jarring and harrowing realisation that somebody that you have loved and and thrown your time and effort into has disappeared and completely removed themselves from your life. While the track’s narrative feels melancholy and heartbroken, the video hints at some kind of rebirth and transformation, growing from the pain into something more powerful, albeit slightly self-destructive in the process.
Speaking about the song, Ruby McKinnon says, “Skeleton Key is about being blindsided – when you throw all your love into someone and then they disappear. I wrote it about a very brief relationship where I hadn’t even met the person, so in a more meta sense it is also about my ability to mine even the smallest, most insignificant moments for inspiration, creating something so dramatic and intense out of essentially nothing.”
