On their final single before the release of their long-awaited new album, DIY indie pop outfit Icarus Phoenix have continued to showcase the kind of intimate and authentic writing and honesty that has endeared them and songwriter Drew Danburry to so many, with the music and words possessing this resonating, relatable edge that feels as human and raw as anything you’re likely to hear anytime soon.
The new single, ‘Doctor! Doctor!’ sees the outfit continuing to come to terms with their place in modern life, taking place in the form of a doctors appointment where they discuss the potential and capabilities that our protagonist has, with them arguing back that there isn’t much point when life is built around working and not being able to seek out intrinsic pleasures and enjoy life. This piggy-backs on some of the themes of recent single ‘High Tide’, while the message still feels as sobering and powerful as ever in this context. This kind of back and forth, having to be convinced that you have value and people care about you and that you’re more than a number or a machine hits hard, and leaves a lasting impression on you as a listener.
