2021 seems to be, emphatically, the year of Liily. Releasing tracks that are everything from thoughtful and slow burning to searing hard rock bangers, to tracks that transform from one to the other, the outfit are at their most prolific and exciting right now, and every new release has you at a loss for what to expect.

Latest release ‘Anvil’ sees the LA band really exploring their sound and showcasing the variety that they’re capable of. The track almost feels like it could descend into chaos as many of its predecessors have, but instead, its measured, shoegaze sound just ticks on, calmly. There is a real sense of Liily being at the peak of their powers as of late and this track is just another example of the confidence that they are operating with, drifting far astray from their comfort zone and feeling impeccably natural in doing it. Their long-awaited debut LP TV or Not TV looks set to be something truly special.

On the single, Liily said: “‘Anvil’ is our attempt at a shoegaze song and ultimately my attempt at variation lyrically. I really tried to poke fun at the intensity at which a song like this could have, exemplifying that through hyperbolic statements like ‘I made my death bed’ or ‘it might be the last thing I ever wear’—just to be as outrageous as possible in the fewest words possible. This was fun for us because we grew up playing around a lot of shoegaze bands but never was one, so it was exciting/challenging to write a song in a genre that we could never imagine playing but love so much.”
