The track follows their acclaimed last single ‘Woman (What’s It Gonna Take to Satisfy You?)’
Little Grim are at their thoughtful and cathartic best on ‘Mercy’. The track delves into the intertwining worlds of memories, social media, relationships and nostalgia, and explores the ways that these things can impact each other, for better or worse.
Social media can unfortunately give us rose tinted glasses when we look back, and this track digs into the concept and ideas behind that. Fortunately, the track itself adds quite a whimsical and melodic nature to an otherwise quite depressing and existential narrative.
“The song is about memories of being a teenager, and feeling the heights of freedom, friendship and expressiveness” says Murphy. “People often look back at the good times of their childhood and wonder what’s changed. Why life felt so simple then and why it seems to constantly web itself in more and more complexities as you get older. ‘Mercy’ is a song that came out of that feeling as I felt the scales shift whilst having a shower in my damp, shitty London flat, and that overwhelming realisation that THIS IS IT. THIS IS YOUR LIFE really began to sink in.” Murphy promises that he confines such moments of abject depression to songwriting and showering alone.
The track packs enough in the way of both likeable, captivating songwriting and harrowing introspection to delicately sit somewhere safe and peaceful in between. ‘Mercy’ is another emphatic tick in the ever expanding W column for Little Grim.
