Maple Glider fights hypocrisy and double standards on her powerful new single ‘Dinah’

Maple Glider is the project of Naarm/Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Tori Zietsch, an exciting and hotly-tipped artist who established the lasting charm and appeal of her indie pop sound on debut album To Enjoy Is The Only Thing back in 2021.

Now the artist has announced its follow up, I Get Into Trouble in October, and with it, the release of her stunning new single ‘Dinah’. The track provides a really interesting juxtaposition between the serene and endearing nature of her sound and her more scathing and unsettling lyrics. ‘Dinah’ explores the double standards in Christianity, with leery church-goers and others passing endless amounts of judgment while acting inappropriately and making people and women feel uncomfortable in their presence. The subject is clearly something that means a lot to the artist, and feels like something of a taboo when hearing lyrics like “I’ve been in a church making sure no-one’s looking up my skirt” bringing her experiences to life in a very real and haunting fashion. The track only continues to highlight the nuance and charm of the artist’s sound, while making for a cleverly disguised cathartic outlet for the artist to vent her valid frustration and disappointment.

Says Zietsch: “For me, “Dinah” is the scariest thing I’ve ever put out. It’s probably the most pop feeling song I’ve released, but it’s really quite an angry song. I have felt incredibly disturbed and frustrated and sad in the process of writing and putting it together. I wanted the video to be fast paced, colourful, and full of energy, the same kind of riled up energy I had when I wrote the song. But it also had to be silly, because I can’t help that.”
