A track that is characterised by its intimate, stripped-back appeal and the emotional resonance of the writing and the careful, painstaking way that it unfolds, latest May Payne single ‘Martha, I’m Sorry’ is an almost eight minute long masterpiece that unfolds to reveal a tale of love, guilt and the conflicted, paintful emotions that come with having to let go of somebody that you really care for.

The track, which serves as the shining centrepiece of her upcoming new EP Keeper, does an incredible job of subtlely building and escalating in tension as the artist pours through her feelings in confessional and candid fashion. There is a real sense of catharsis that permeates the release, with the deftness of the writing building up to a heartbreaking apology from the artist after having to put an end to her relationship and hurt somebody that she feels so much for. It is a track that anybody who has been stuck in such a situation and had to power through the hardest part will resonate with, and it captures all of the emotions associated with it in a truly soul-baring way.

“I’ve been broken up with many times, each time kicking and screaming — I’ve genuinely written essays begging for people to stay with me.” May says of the new release. “Historically, I’ve avoided the end at all costs, no matter how badly they treated me, no matter how negative the overall experience of being in that relationship was.

“A few years ago, I found myself on the opposite side. I realised that I had to break-up with someone that I thought was my person. I put it off for a really, really long time because it went against everything in my nature to inflict that kind of pain onto somebody else. I wrote this song the day after I finally managed to do it. It’s my way of saying sorry.”
