The pre-breakup anthem sees the artist deliver more of her signature unhinged pop, but with a darker edge.
Sultry new single ‘Boulders’ sees MCAULEY slow down the tempo but amp up the atmosphere to 11. There is an abrasive and hard-hitting element to this sound that has not really been unearthed within MCAULEY’s sound to this extent, from its colossal guitar hooks to the artists focused and unforgiving vocal delivery.
A lot of the fun and carefree sounds of MCAULEY’s previous singles are stripped away and the track is all the better for it. ‘Boulders’ is a track that is steeped in reality, and although the artists obvious pop appeal still rears its head at times with its sweet melodies and charm, lyrically and thematically ‘Boulders’ feels like the artists most serious and daring effort yet, and hints at a darker side to the artists signature cutting edge sound.
“My ex broke up with me, and I took him back. Twice.” MCAULEY says of the track. “The third time around, he really tried. But no matter what he did, I couldn’t make myself feel the way I did before. I resented his recklessness and built all these walls to protect my own feelings, but all it really did was dissolve them.”
