The track is the fourth new single from the thoughtful and engrossing artist
On her poignant and stirring new single ‘Cry of the Magpie’, Vancouver artist Moira Chicilo explores the impending climate crisis and changing state of the world with the kind of thoughtful charm and immersive writing that she has established throughout her three previous releases.
The track uses the the cries of the titular bird to serves as a kind of metaphor for the state of the world, crying and trying to alert us and grab our attention, trying to make us aware of what’s going on around us and in the world but with so many people choosing to ignore it or tune it out. These are the realities of the world now and the way that people deal with these things, complain about it, forget about it when it suits them, and then complain about it again the next day to complete the cycle. The artist’s stirring alt-folk sound does a great job of shining a light on this and makes for some really compelling moments, but the underlying darkness of the message and reminders of the realities leave a much more lasting impression.
