As an emo band who are growing known for the very literal and confessional nature of their sound and narratives, a track that is a verbatim breakup story feels fairly on brand for NOTADOG, and ‘Probably Happy’ serves as as exactly what you would hope it would be, brutal honesty and all.
The track is blessed with a fun, Weezer-esque riff that keeps things together, interspersed with wild moments of chaos when the emotions and frustrations all get too much for the band, making for an unpredictable and exciting ride that mirrors the conflicted feelings that come with having to move on. There are a lot of thoughtful and hard-hitting moments here, as well as some that feel purely like lashing out and diving into hypothetical scenarios, but it all feels authentic and real throughout, something that NOTADOG do a great job of achieving throughout their work.
