Thoughtful, poignant lyrics and sounds are what we have come to expect from emerging Dutch artist Penny Roox, but each new release provides a little bit more of an insight as to her lush sonic world and surprises and beguiles us with the deftness and beauty of her talent.
The latest track to continue this trend is the effortlessly textured ‘Do You Remember’, a gorgeous, nostalgic piece of writing that looks back fondly over memories of a loved one from the past. The vulnerable and candid nature of the artist’s writing makes for a really captivating listening experience that gently washes you away among these fond memories and within the artist’s mind. More stellar work from an artist who seems incapable of anything other than seamless brilliance.
“I wrote ‘Do You Remember’ after I had a strange dream about my high school sweetheart.” Penny Roox has said of the track. “It made me think about lost memories like that time we watched the Joy Division movie Control and I cried my eyes out, or how we always smoked cigarettes in his bed. Or how small I felt when we talked about me wanting to be a musician. It felt kinda liberating writing a song about him. Anyhow – it made me wonder if he remembers these things too.”
