The track is from their upcoming second album It’s Not Comfortable To Grow.
An outfit that have emerged to become one of my favourites as of late are Plastic Mermaids. An outfit that have an incredible sense of deftness and range, whether crafting groove-laden bops like ‘Disco Wings’ or harrowingly personal, diaristic tracks like the goosebump-inducing ‘Something Better’, the outfit never falter in their mission to surprise and delight listeners with their thoughtful and engaging sounds.
The latest release from the outfit is new single ‘Girl Boy Girl’, the latest from their upcoming second LP It’s Not Comfortable to Grow. The outfit’s synth-laden, 80s tinged sound is out in full force here, showcasing their irresistible uniqueness in a way that it feels like only they can. There is an innate ability that Plastic Mermaids have to make their lyrics feel deeply personal and intimate, almost like you’re having a conversation with the outfit yourself, and it makes for a really distinctive and immersive experience. From the drive and uncertainty of the sound and lyrics, to the outright uncomfortable nature of the creatively anxiety-inducing music video, Plastic Mermaids are an outfit that are at their peak creatively and artistically, and their forthcoming album looks set to be a contender for one of the best of the year.
Frontman Doug Richards expands; “Girl Boy Girl is an uncomfortable place, an unspoken awkwardness and tension. Always convoluting, never resolving. Just like this perpetual frustration when a relationship isn’t right but none has the language or understanding to fix it. And then thinking that adding a 3rd party to the mix is going to solve the problems…oh dear.”
