The experimental pop artist’s unique and distinctive sounds are always interesting, but it is the heart and emotion within her lyrics and vocals that makes her really stand out. ‘Roller Skating’ is an earnest whirlwind of emotions that captures the range of feelings that come with young love. “My boyfriend once told me this story about how when he was in middle school he used to go to the roller rink and basically just meet girls, skate around, and kiss them.” Plunki says of the new track. “The thought of being that young and being able to be that forward and brave and open was just so baffling to me and so different from my experience. I was very fearful and closed off to even the faintest idea of intimacy with another human – especially as a young queer person who was just trying to figure myself out. It was funny how something that would have been such a big deal for me was just a fun casual occurrence for someone else. I just had to write about it and create a fantasy scenario where I could explore what it would be like to be someone like that approaching someone like my younger self.”
