Indie-Pop and Folk enigma Plain Mister Smith is back with his new single ‘Flawed Diamonds’
The brainchild of Vancouver artist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Mark Jowett, Plain Mister Smith has already established a reputation for his innovative yet accessible songwriting and unique image, often appearing in a pinstriped suit with a big globe for ahead.
Released via Popoganda Records, the new single ‘Flawed Diamonds’ is the first look at the upcoming debut album ’I’m Just Plain Mister Smith’.
Balancing on the fence between Alternative-Pop, Folk and Indie, Plain Mister Smith creates airy, melancholic soundscapes akin to the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Elliot Smith and Death Cab For Cutie.
‘Flawed Diamonds’ features vocals from Jocelyn Price and breakthrough Canadian Folk artist Jordan Klassen, topping the whimsical backdrop of drums, bass, acoustic guitar and reverb soaked keys with catchy, intertwining male, female harmonies.
Described as “a lover to lover homage to freak beauty” The single doesn’t doesn’t simply rely only on it’s floating instrumentation and earworm vocals but also holds a unique sense of irony, absurdity and humour which only adds to it’s glowing charm.
Speaking about the process behind the writing of ‘Flawed Diamonds’ Mark said: “I wrote Flawed Diamonds over several years, then sent out to Jordan, one of my favourite Vancouver artists, who recommended Jocelyn and he duet on it.
(I have a woeful voice so always like others to sing my songs if possible). It was a kind of “long and winding road” way of creating a song but it’s thrilling when you get the song back with actual vocals on it – it’s always different then you think it’s going to sound.”
