Rising indie-pop icon SANNIA shares relatable heartbreak anthem ‘Love You Like’
Returning with her first offering since lockdown started, SANNIA draws unlikely inspiration from an Amy Winehouse biopic in the latest single ‘Love You Like‘.
“Love You Like” may come across as a slow-burner in places, but its sharp-pop arrangement will instantly steal your attention.
A true asset to Australia’s music scene, the track was co-produced with industry heavyweight Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy).
Speaking about the release, SANNIA shares, “I recorded the first demo of ‘Love You Like’ with an old SM58, an interface and my laptop in my bedroom during the 110-day Melbourne lockdown.
That summer I took the demo to producer Oscar Dawson, and we decided to ‘get weird’ recording guitars, bass, tambourine through crystallisers, running the vocals through guitar distortion pedals and tracking live drums over the top of the beats I’d put together on my laptop.
Our goal was to make a song that sonically reflected that slow burn and addictive rush of a toxic relationship.
Like most people in lockdown last year, I was hitting the streaming services pretty hard but I was really moved by the Amy (2015) film on Netflix – I found myself quite struck by the story of her ex checking her out of rehab to get high together.
I thought about it for days afterwards, how alone she must’ve felt to only feel whole with a person that was doing irreparable damage, and how isolated she must’ve felt to walk away from help for the belonging she felt with him.
For me her addiction to her enabler was more heartbreaking than her other dependencies and I think a lot of people have experienced a toxic love like that at least once, it stays with you. And breaking that addiction really does feel like a come down, and I really wanted to explore that with this song.”
Going through heartbreak and needing a pick me up? Look no further – this track was made for you.
Relatable and a track you can depend on in the darkest of moments, ‘Love You Like’ is powerfully original.
