South London trio Ski Lift are back with extraordinary single ‘Moaning Again’
“Moaning Again” is the second of a trio of single releases from Ski Lift this Spring.
Out worldwide tomorrow, the upbeat anthem tackles mental health problems and comes across as a relatable number during these uneasy times.
A track about acceptance and being your own best friend, this impactful single comes as a sort of helping hand and comfort.
Vocalist and songwriter Benji of Ski Lift tells us, “a song can mean many things to many people, and even to me this one represents so many fragmented thoughts. I know it originated from what was basically a diary entry (I don’t keep one but sometimes my lyric book is used in that way). It was a kind of pep talk, trying to justify and normalise my low mood at the time.
The original text was much darker really, but I had to cut it down. But now when I hear it I think also about capitalism and the consumerist culture which essentially sells envy; social media constantly bombarding us with success stories, reminding us of our own shortcomings by comparison.
Whatever level you’re at, there’s always someone doing slightly better than you. No matter how great your life, you will always find something to moan about. I suppose you’ve just got to accept that, and just try to be as grateful as you can. Fat chance though…”
Musically, the track refuses to be a slow burner and is instantly quick off the mark. Lyrically, ‘Moaning Again’ is engaging and feels like the sort of pep talk you’d give yourself in the mirror.
Summer has certainly come early with this feel-good bop!
