The track is the first single from the duo’s upcoming new album Easier.
Sad Girls Aquatics Club are a Pittsburgh duo that have spent the last few years developing a sound that feels entirely their own. Melding the fun textures and colourful soundscapes of indie pop with a thoughtful and poignant sense of melancholy, there is a delicate nature to the sound that drips with creativity and personality throughout their tracks.
The latest addition to their arsenal is the emotionally rousing new single ‘Plastic & Pearl’, one that attempts to come to terms with the emptiness of modern society, whether that lies within the relationships that we form or the commodification of things like art and culture. While consumerism and emptiness are big themes of the track, the song itself couldn’t feel more real, and packed full of heart. There is a sense of disconnect that permeates the vocals throughout but there is an overriding sense that the apathy comes from a really human place of longing for something more. As well as this, the cute little sonic quirks and artistic expression make for a track that feels lovingly handcrafted, serving itself almost as an argument against the robotic processes that seem to be taking over these aspects of our lives. The track is a really wonderful and endearing statement from the duo, and with their new album Easier set for release in February, this could be the start of an exciting new era for Sad Girls Aquatics Club.
