The track follows the release of the artist’s lauded recent single ‘golden boy’
A poignant and reflective exploration of love and longing that feels gripping and thoughtful throughout, ‘what if it ends?’ sees Melbourne indie-pop artist Sidney contemplating what the future looks like without certain comforts and places of safety that we have in our life, where would I be if my relationship ends? If my career or some other kind of journey I’m on slips through my fingers and leaves me stranded?
The thoughtful and moving nature of the sound and the upbeat and stirring nature of the soundscape makes for a really compelling listen and one that is packed full of heart and charm, ringing with a conversational authenticity and low-key appeal that gives it a sense of rawness and heart. The track does a great job of articulating these feelings in a way that feels relatable and personal, and provides a level of acceptance and willing to trust that everything works out for the best that feels liberating.
Of the track, Sidney shares, “’what if it ends?’ was written right after a huge career milestone, opening for one of my childhood heroes. I should’ve felt on top of the world, but instead, I panicked. What if that was the peak? What if nothing ever tops this? That fear of hoping too much stuck with me.
“As life moved on, I started relating to the song in a whole new way – especially in my relationship. It’s about how things can look perfect on the surface but underneath you’re not really sure it’s working. We put so much pressure on making the “right” choice, but is that even real? Sometimes the scariest decision – the one that takes real courage – ends up being the best one you ever make.”
