The lauded and rising band continue to showcase their nuance and charm on their relatable new single.
Equal parts artsy and emphatic, Brighton’s Youth Sector have won ourselves and many others over thanks to their zany, entirely unique and distinctive sound and appeal over the last few years.
The latest single from the band is ‘Benign Fire in a Small Room’, an all too relatable release about the state of the world and how it feels like literally (l i t e r a l l y) everything is falling apart and going to shit around us. The fun metaphor of somebody going about his day to day life while being on fire articulates this concept really nicely, and when paired with the off-kilter nature of their sound, makes for a really compelling track that feels both stylish and fun but with a really gloomy sense of realism that reminds you that this is genuinely the point that things have got to.
“This feels like our most mature offering so far and is my personal favourite on the EP. I had this core image of a person being totally on fire but being the last to know or care about it; I loved it as a metaphor for trying to drudge through life even as things are falling apart for you and everyone can see it. But to be honest I had so much fun just taking that image at face value and running with it for a full 3 minutes – following this guy to work as he tries to get through a day without drawing attention to the fact he’s on fire, and slowly, reluctantly acknowledging it: “It appears that I’m on fire but I think it will go out soon”.
