One of the great things about music is its innate ability to surprise and beguile. This is doubly true with debut singles, and Cody Frost‘s ‘Verbal Warning’ manages to do that in such a perfect and expectation shattering way.
The track begins innocuously, with Frost’s wonderful, harrowing voice met with just a piano, before the track builds and gradually gives way to a scathing electronic pop assault. The track seamlessly transitions from tranquil and heartfelt to volatile and fun. It’s narrative about a former boss quickly turns from quiet distate to a vehement and uncompromising “fuck you”.
‘Verbal Warnings’ is a fun, cathartic and thoroughly cutting edge and dynamic track from an artist who, at just 21, will have firmly established her place on ones to watch lists across the country.
“I used to work in a kids soft play area that was part of a pub,” she explains. “My boss there was an absolute douchebag who just lived for his job, which made me so angry. The only way I could channel that anger was to write a song about him and people like him in general – those people who think they’re superior to you because they’ve got a company car and think they’re set for life.”
