We caught up with emerging indie pop artist Faerie following the release of her wonderfully dreamy new single ‘k-town’
Since her 2020 emergence, Faerie has been making her name for herself thanks to her immersive, dreamy tracks and effortlessly enticing vocals. Tracks like debut single ‘Fever Dream’ and new release ‘k-town’ have established the artist as one to watch thanks to her distinctive charm and appeal.
The latter of these tracks came out just today and is a perfect encapsulation of everything that makes Faerie so revered and exciting. From the gorgeous nature of the hypnotic soundscape to her thoughtful lyrics about suppressed memories and an overwhelming yearning for enlightenment, ‘k-town’ boasts both catchy pop sensibilities and a distinctive charm and personality that allows her sound to feel both familiar yet cutting edge and exciting. We love this new track and have reached out to Faerie to have a chat about this new release and find out some more about the emerging artist.
Who TF is Faerie?
Faerie is fantasy, beauty, and chaos with stories that dive deep into hidden thoughts and feelings. She’s both an exaggeration and the most vulnerable version of myself.
How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music since I was a child, really. I recently found old notebooks filled with lyrics and stories from when I was about 10 or 11 years old (not my best work, but a start). I remember teaching myself piano on a small keyboard, so I could accompany my lyrics and vocal melodies. Then my parents gifted me my first guitar at 12 or 13 and the rest is history.
Why do you make music?
I make music because it’s become a way of healing. I learn more about myself through songwriting. It’s such a therapeutic moment when I finally finish a song and listen back just to hear myself pour all this emotion out within a couple of minutes. The best feeling is when I hear back from listeners that say they relate to my stories. These are the reasons I keep going.
What are your biggest influences?
Overall, I’d have to say Lorde, Jack Antonoff, Harry Styles, Fleetwood Mac, and Regina Spektor are at the top of my list. From style to energy to storytelling, I’m amazed by how they present themselves and the relationship they’ve built with their listeners. I could sit and watch all of their live performances and I’d always leave feeling inspired!
Recently, I’ve been listening to Tame Impala, Arctic Monkeys, Mitski, Bon Iver, and HAIM to really get me in the mood for writing. Their music just puts me in a nostalgic place and all my memories from my teenage years start flooding in.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
I would say anytime I’m able to perform live. I performed at TEDxChelsea Park in NYC right before the pandemic and it felt exhilarating. When live events started opening up again, I immediately took the chance to perform my new music at a Paint & Vibe coffeehouse-type of setting (hosted by a friend, Justine Enriquez). The people I met there really inspired me to keep writing and start this project that eventually became ‘k-town’.
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
Hmm, an indie-pop wonderland of dreamy synths, groovy bass, and story-filled lyrics. For “k-town” specifically, I’d say the same but with a dash of psych-pop influences. If you listen to either Harry Styles, Tame Impala, Lana Del Rey, or Florence + The Machine, maybe you’d be into this track!
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
I was thinking about this the other day, actually! I used to think it would be one day seeing my lyrics on a moody Tumblr post (lol). But now, I think it’s either being able to perform all my new work in front of a crowd or hearing from someone that my music inspired them somehow.
We love your new single ‘k-town’, what more can you tell us about it?
Sure! ‘k-town’ is used as a place of escape from the world outside, a place I’ve created countless memories in. It’s about the gossip I’ve heard on purpose and by accident there. Here, I realize the consequences of being caught in the center of it all and try to find my way out.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
I’ve got lots of plans to write and release more music! It’s a project I’ve been waiting to execute since I started performing as Faerie in 2016. I’m so excited to finally give you a peek of what’s to come! “k-town” is just the start.
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
I would say my friends, my boyfriend, and my small team (shout out to my producer Matty Bedrosian). The support I’ve received from them is unbelievable. I’m forever grateful for their encouragement and for being with me every step of the way.
