We had a chat with rising Stockholm indie-folk artist Alex Gerdt following the release of his thoughtful new EP It’s Later Than You Think
His personal and captivating brand of indie-folk has seen Stockholm artist Alex Gerdt beginning to makes waves and win over admirers over the last few years, with the emotional resonance and compelling allure of his songwriting and soft melodies helping him to build a burgeoning reputation that looks to keep growing, often using his personal experiences with things like mental health and overcoming obstacles to inform a powerful style.
The artist’s new EP It’s Later Than You Think feels like the most accomplished and fully-formed work from the artist to date, continuing to explore these themes with a sense of deftness and understated thoughtfulness, utilising his experiences and feelings to create something that feels truly moving and captivating, leaving a lasting impression on you as a listener. We love the new collection of tracks, and as a result had a chat with Alex Gerdt to find out a bit more about his story and his distinctive style.
Who TF is Alex Gerdt?
Alex Gerdt is a singer-songwriter from Sweden who writes folk and country infused songs with lots of acoustic guitar and layered vocals in an American inspired tradition.
How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music since I was 12. Writing songs, recording on porta-studios, making my own CDs and so on.
Why do you make music?
I love to be in that state when time flies when you’re writing a song. I love to be in the studio and record. I love when people listen and relate.
What are your biggest influences?
My biggest influences are artists like Ben Howard, Bon Iver, Paolo Nutini and Noah Kahan.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
I think my best moments are yet to come. It feels like I’ve finally grown in to my own shoes so to speak. The work with this release has been a changing moment. I’m finally ready to really give my music a real chance.
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
The songs are often expressing a mode with narrative lyrics and layers of vocals and melodic acoustic guitar. The sound is often pretty chilled out and combines a melancholic, suggestive feel with hopefulness.
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
Being a supporting act to someone like Ben Howard would surely be a game changer. To be able to be heard by people that might find something in my music that speaks to them.
We love your new single ‘Later Than You Think’, what more can you tell us about it?
Thank you! “Later than you think” was, unlike many of my songs, written in the studio. It was all about the feel and the sound of the production. I wanted to expand my sound and do more in the production state. I spend much time making the production demo. When we later recorden in Atlantis studio in Stockholm the sound grew thanks to great musicians. I like the chorus, the sound and the positive feel combined with the melancholic lyrics.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
The future is all about playing live. Venues in Stockholm this summer and then a bigger realese gig after the summer. Then I want to record even more.
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
My biggest fan must be my family. They support me in everything I do and cheers me on. That means a lot. It’s also an overwhelming feeling when others tells me that they like the songs and the lyrics.
