On her stirring and immersive new single ‘Tomato Song’, American multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Melissa Lingo, in her musical guise meka, continues to showcase her effortlessly compelling and memorable charm that evokes the spirit of the hazy sweet spot of 60’s-70’s folk and its nostalgic allure.
The new release has a wonderfully nuanced and thoughtful feel to it throughout, accentuated by the artist’s layered songwriting and a sense of melancholy that permeates it throughout and gives it a really emotional core as it progresses. “Some things are so unbearably sad or unbearably beautiful that it’s hard for me to tell a dream from life from nightmare” explains meka. “My mom does sleep in the garden every summer, protecting her peas and strawberries from deer and rabbits, and you can usually find me perched somewhere with a cigarette, bargaining with death. ‘Tomato song’ is ripe with rot, an ode to the in between, to the Graveyard of Dreams, which also happens to be the Fertile Compost for Hope.”
