As she builds towards the release of her long-awaited new album The Eldest Daughter, Gatlin has been blessing us with a collection of intimate and personal tracks that have already had us tipping the album as one of the most exciting releases to come this year, and her moving new single ‘Happy’ is just the latest to help build our excitement.

The new single is part of her double release Pipe Dream / Happy and delves into the artist’s struggles with depression and the darkness that she often finds herself immersed in. There is a really poignant and moving feel to the track throughout, and the way that it gradually grows into something that feels soaring and powerful is really deftly handled and flows in a way that feels natural and stirring. Some of the nuances and details in the narrative are quite personal and specific, but the overarching message of not feeling happy and searching for something more is something that is easy to resonate with and attach yourself to.

“I started writing this song with my friend Carrie K a couple years ago about my depression,” Gatlin explains. “It started when I was talking about how I would sometimes daydream about ending up in the hospital so then this guy I liked would come visit me and realize he was desperately in love with me – and also would remember to text me back. Peak of delusion!!! Yeah, this song is just about good ole depression. I was listening to a lot of Avril Lavigne and Mazzy Star when we were doing the production on this song – so it was heavily influenced by that.”
